I have the latest binary available for MacOS; I haven't tried
building from source on the Mac.
However, I just tried it with client 1.5.3 on a Linux system, and the
exact same thing happens:

[comment out anon-access = none line in svnserve.conf]
% svn co $SVN/bloch/testing
svn: Not authorized to open root of edit operation
[uncomment anon-access = none in svnserve.conf]
% svn co $SVN/bloch/testing
[a bunch of A messages]
Checked out revision 72.

Lemme see... Ah: the server is running 1.4.6. Maybe I should try
upgrading that.
