As you mentioned in your firs email, there is a FAQ about this problem.
  RedHat Linux 9 is *very* sensitive because of the new NPTL support.
It is vital that you use kernel and glibc RPMs for the same architecture
(i.e. most likely i686). If you mix them you get problems.

One way to fix the problem is to recompile the db4 RPM without the flag
to enable posix mutexes in the spec file.
