Well, I went ahead and downgraded to 1.5.4, and the problem completely disappeared.
Since I'm not using any advanced features, and 1.5.4 was working just fine for me, that's a solution that works for the present. Hopefully, someone will figure out what went wrong and correct it for 1.5.6
