Overlay icons appear slowly or not at all

I'm encountering a real problem with overlay icons. The icons update very
slowly when I traverse a working copy, and in some cases, either don't
update after a change or disappear completely.

It's often seen after a merge, where several subfolders in the WC are
updated. All the TSVN overlay icons disappear, so there's no indication of
the state of the WC right when I need it the most. When the problem
happens, if I navigate to the bottom of the WC, where individual files are,
I can usually see the correct state of the files. So with a little bit of
work, I can get by, but it's very awkward. The problem comes and goes in
any particular WC -- sometimes things work OK, and sometimes not.

I've had the problem before, and checked the archives for how to fix it. In
the past, steps like reinstalling TSVN, or checking out a fresh WC helped
for a while. But the problem is back, and it seems to be worse.

Is there something I can tweak in Windows to get icons throughout my WC?

TSVN 1.4.3 build 8645 (32-bit)
Windows XP SP2
SVN version is 1.4.3
