The big one being that, until recently, the bindings were not as mature
and more likely to fail to build correctly. By making a "big tent"
makefile, you are causing the more stable core build to rely on less
stable features. Granted, the user has to explicitely ask for that pain
during configure. At the very least, _no_ bindings should be default
specifically unless requested.
