0.16 client with 0.17 server?

We've just upgraded our server to 0.17, but I'm still using the 0.16
client from Debian 'unstable'. Committing a property change fails:

  svn: Commit failed (details follow):
  svn: applying log message to /repos/!svn/wbl/21467155-c1b4-0310-b8fa-aa9728369d99/20313: /repos/!svn/wbl/21467155-c1b4-0310-b8fa-aa9728369d99/20313: 500 (status)

  Could not execute PROPPATCH.

Is this an obscure way of saying that I can't use a 0.16 client with a
0.17 server? Or is it something else?
