Why default to "edit"? At least default to notepad, which is slightly
more user-friendly. And what if the user doesn't want an editor at all?

that --- one that hasn't been released yet.

This DLL is freely available for download from Microsoft. I don't think
we should install it ourselves. The installer should just check if it's
on the system, and refuse to continue if it isn't, pointing the user to
the URL where she can download it.

Yes, it's "just" for determining the user-specific and global
configuration path. Read that thread, rhen read the docs for that DLL --
the config data path is different on Win95/98/Me, WinNT, and Win2k/XP.
Why should we write a whole bunch of stuff if we get it for free ina DLL
specifically designed for the task?
