The new system doesn't provide any substantial benefits yet. It's
mostly a framework to provide benefits in the future. (I said I do
the development in stages.) Give that the regression test suite
coverage is incomplete the new stuff may well swap one set of bugs for
another. Since we are generally happy with the current locking bugs,
it may be more sensible to revert this stiff for alpha.
