Path based authorization with LDAP

In the context of path based authotization with Apache server (LDAP authentication), I wonder if it is possible to use, when defining users or groups the following format:
user@domain.suffix
Instead of:
DOMAIN\user o user
I have done some tests and it seems to work, but it's not documented in the official book.
Anyone has some experience with this??
