I think the best explanation is probably that the big feature for 1.5
was going to be merge tracking. But a survey was recently conducted
to ask whether people would like to wait for merge tracking (which I
believe they said would take at least another 6 months of
development), or have 1.5 now, with a lot of smaller fixes which have
already been made, which in and of themselves might merit a release.
People had differing opinions on whether 1.5 without merge tracking
should appear now, or whether to wait for 1.5 with merge tracking
later. In any case, true renames is, as I understand it, a major
undertaking, and adding another big feature on top of what's already
in 1.5 would delay the release by much longer, and that's no good.
Better to release what's done now, or wait a little bit and release
it with merge tracking, and plan rename support for a later release.
