So the entire desktop is black, *except* you can see the mouse pointer
move, correct?

Try pressing Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the Task Manager. In case
something is stealing 99.9999% of the CPU, give this up to a minute or
two to come up. What happens? Sort the processes by CPU usage to see if
something is slamming the system. If some process is hogging the CPU,
try ending the process and see if the system comes back.

If Task Manager doesn't comes up, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up
the security dialog. That this key combination generates a hardware
interrupt, so this is different from the Task Manager key combo. Again,
give this some time to come up, in case a runaway process is slamming
the processor. From here you can get to the Task Manager.

Good clue. I'd take a look in the Windows Event Log for system or
application errors related to Apache or Subversion. Select Start | All
Programs | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer. Are you familiar with
looking around in there?
