Perhaps, I should just get something simple to work first:
Here is what I am doing command line:

What why is it only working when svn:ignore is set directly on the
"code" directory? In reality, I will have to do something similar to
this to get all the .class files not to be included. The problem is
that my ".class" files are in the same folder tree as my ".java"
files, so I can't just exclude some "classes" directory because I
would be throwing out the ".java" files as well. Taking ".class" files
to a separate directory than ".java" files is NOT an option (yes,
there IS a good reason for this.)
I figure if can get ".metadata" to be excluded through the top level
directory's svn:ignore, I would be able to figure out how to do the
same for the ".class" files.
Thanks,
Yaakov.
