Can't find a temporary directory

Hi,
I'm running svn 1.2.3, and have been using svn without any problems until now.

>svn co -r HEAD https://svn.sourcesecure.co.uk/osflash/actionstep/trunk
svn: REPORT request failed on '/osflash/actionstep/!svn/vcc/default'
svn: Can't find a temporary directory

afaik, the server is also running Subversion 1.2.3 (r15833). What is wrong?
