There's a whole mailing list for apr@, maybe you can ask for help
there. There's also an #apr channel on irc.freenode.net.

And yes, regarding learning curve, it *did* take the svn developers
about 3 years to figure out how to use pools correctly. (Everything
else was easy.) We've documented pool usage as a 'best practice' in
the Subversion HACKING file.
