Checkout only parts of a repository?

Hi SVN experts,

Is there an easy way to glance though a repository and checkout only a part
of it?

The reason behind this question is that we want to create a huge repository
that contains also very large binary files. The latter are not all needed by
all users, so that it would be benefitial if one could select only those
files that one actually wants. The same holds for some subdirectories, i.e.
not all users of the repository would need to do a complete checkout in
order not to speed up the process and not to blow up their hard disk.

Any hints?
