Ben, I was running regedit from the "Run..." prompt which says it launches tasks with administrative privileges; I did not try right clicking registry editor on the start menu and choosing run as administrator. I would assume that would effectively be running it the same was as the Run prompt but not sure.
I agree it is far from ideal to have to download a third party tool to do this, I was just thrilled to find a solution... was very close to giving up.

Presumably, Patrick tried that, but ya hate to get a third party utility involved if Windows' built-in privilege escalation facility is sufficient.
