The problem isn't password protection, the problem is filesystem
permissions, share permissions & locking semantics which may or may
not be compatible with what the Subversion libraries are doing.
Because this can vary so widely, and there may be SOME configurations
which can mostly work, but there's no way to be 100% certain in all
cases, the standard advice is that it's simply not supported at all,
and please Don't Do That [TM].
