installing the right version

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3. AMD 64 x2 Dual Core.
I downloaded the 64bit version and the install told me 'this is not the right version for your computer; it will not run'.
So I downloaded and installed the 32bit version. It installed, but every time I do any action in Tortoise I get an error in TortoiseProc.exe:
"Instruction referenced memory ...yada yada ... could not be read. OK to terminate."
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but to no avail.
What am I doing wrong? What version *should* I be installing?
P.S. Why can I not 'Post a new thread' on the forum? I chose Post New Thread (/postMessage.do), entered a subject and my post, clicked 'Save Changes' and it told me
"Message not saved - The email addresses you entered for other recipients must be in the correct format and cannot contain illegal characters."
