installing the right version

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3. AMD 64 x2 Dual Core.

I downloaded the 64bit version and the install told me 'this is not the right version for your computer; it will not run'.

So I downloaded and installed the 32bit version. It installed but every time I do any action in Tortoise I get an error in TortoiseProc.exe:

"Instruction referenced memory ...yada yada... could not be read. OK to terminate."

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but to no avail.

What am I doing wrong? What version of Tortoise *should* I be running?
