Why not train them to keep a Check for Modifications window open all
the time, and just hit Refresh when they need to?

How much overall system performance are you willing to give up in
exchange for this? That's the key question here - the cache has to
recurse through the whole WC to check status, and on a large WC and/or
slow disk, that can get painful (been there myself).
