basic question about connecting to visualsvn server

Hi: I installed visualsvn server and tortoisesvn client on a server2003 box.
I created a repository and project using the server's GUI, and set up a user
with subversion authentication.

I launched the repo-browser from tortoise and pasted in the repository URL
which is configured with HTTPS...I was prompted to accept the certificate
which I did, and then was prompted to enter a username/password. I had only
created a single user in visualsvn, and it has read/write permissions on the
project, but the credentials were not accepted. After 5 unsuccessful login
attempts, the repository opened...maybe in read-only mode?

The tortoise docs say you need to connect using svn://, but that doesn't
appear to be an option with visualsvn server?

TIA
