I also have Vista Ultimate 64bit. It depends on the software you are
using, whether you need the 32bit or the 64bit TortoiseSVN. If you use
standard Windows Explorer, you will need the 64bit version. If you are
using a 32bit Explorer llike application (I use Servant Salamander
from http://www.altap.cz/) to browse your file system, you need the
32bit version. If you are regularly using both 32bit and 64bit
applications to browse your file system, you will need to install both
versions.

That sounds a good thing to try. Sorry I can't help you with the other
topic. Although we have the OSes and I did the same thing as you did,
I got the error messages about a missing DLL and uninstall-reboot-
install-reboot did the trick for me. Good luck and let us know when
you found something.
