If that was Unix or Linux, my guess would be that the drive is mounted with
the sync option, i.e. every operation waits for the file and the metadata
to be on disk before continuing. Checkout and update need to touch *many*
small files.

Does windows have such an option? As far as I know it doesn't, but after
ten years writing software on Windows I still get surprises sometimes.
