I create and test installers at work and have installed the
stand-alone msi 3.1 on numerous pc's, and I've never come across any
problems with it. As far as installing SP2, i did run into one case
where i had to do a full re-install of windows, but that was actually
because the pc had a virus on it before i installed sp2 which caused
the sp2 install to fail and leave the pc in a bad state. Said virus
even was one that exploited something sp2 had fixed, I wish i had
remembered to install sp2 earlier on this pc.

Even with virus detection and firewalls I'd highly recommend you
install sp2. It's pretty bad to say windows and reliability is an
oxymoron when you yourself refuse to install patches that improve its
reliability. There's always a chance the sp2 install could fail, but
the chance of that is smaller than the fact you haven't done it
causing a problem later on.
