My answer is I don't. I can tell you my own experience with Windows update.
I bought my Dell laptop about 2 years ago. It had Windows XP Home Edition
pre-installed. Every now and then, Windows asked me to do upgrades. I
ignored them at the beginning but eventually (a few weeks later) I wanted to
give it a try (especially it mentioned about security upgrade). So I did the
upgrade. Nothing broke. Everything worked as normal. But the problem is that
I noticed that when Windows finishes booting up, it uses 10MB more memory
than before. I am not happy.
First, I don't leave my computer on all the time. Plus I have installed
ZoneAlarm and Mcafee virus scan. I really don't see the point of installing
those Windows junk. Who knows. Eventally it may use 300 MB just to load up
Windows (right now it is about 160 MB after closing ZoneAlarm and Mcafee).
Now I am quite stuck. I cannot uninstall it (oh I really don't want to even
try that).
I still think that Windows and reliability are oxymoron. Consumers don't
care about reliability or performance (memory usage or speed) but they want
features. And this is what Microsoft is doing.
My knowledge of Windows is quite limited. And this made me more paranoid. I
just don't want to spend hours to search for solutions or fixes when Windows
don't work or my software is not working as normal. I am really a dumb user.
Anyway, back to TSVN. First I am very happy with TSVN and I start using it a
lot (both at home and at work). I also spend time reading TSVN documentation
and SVN book. Thanks for great work on the documentation as well. So
eventually I would have to convince myself to be brave enough to install the
Windows Installer 3.1 so that I can have the latest TSVN. I have thought
about donation and for sure I will do it this year.
