I have installed WinXP and added SP2 many many times. Unless you have
a specific critical application that won't work, just install SP2 and
be done with it.

How do you stay current with security updates? Frequent OS updates are
a fact of using a modern general-pupose PC, whether it's linux, OSX,
or Windows. Get used to it.
