Icon overlays and windows XP64 professional

I have

TortoiseSVN 1.6.3, Build 16613 - 64 Bit , 2009/06/20 09:28:19

installed on an XP64 SP2 machine. Tortoise appears to work
correctly but I have no icon overlays in windows explorer at
all. It is not clear from the FAQ or other posts whether it
is, in fact, possible to make this work. There appears to
be a large amount of mis-information dealing with this topic.

A recent post dealing with this issue on Vista 64 said:

"64-bit TSVN will only provide icon overlays to 64-bit apps. If you
want them to work on 32-bit apps you have to install the 32-bit
version as well."

Not knowing whether windows explorer is 32-bit or 64-bit, I tried
installing TSVN 32-bit. This completely killed TSVN. I had to uninstall
both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions and then reinstall 64-bit TSVN to
get it working again-- with no icon overlays. Not helpful.

Can someone please tell me for certain whether it is possible to make
TSVN work on XP64 with icon overlays in windows explorer? And, if so,
how to do this?

Thanks.
