I got caught by this one too a while back. There are actually 2
different splitter cursors. Go a little to the left and you will see the
other one.
<-|-> works
<-||-> doesn't work

The reason for this is that there are hidden columns with width set to
0, which Stefan said was very much easier to implement than trying to
add and remove columns completely. Right click to see the list of
columns that can be enabled.
