Well, since Microsoft *wrote* Windows, yeah.

That said, *some* indication of activity, even if it can't be a progress
meter or a serial list of file names, would seem to be appropriate. The
windows dialog probably uses the animated gif because it takes up a
negligible amount of cpu time.
