No, it's not common in Belgian Dutch either. I don't think I've ever
heard somebody say it.

I don't know a better word though. I seem to recall that dBase
translated "to browse" als "grasduinen" (that's also what Van Dale
says), and I think phpmyadmin uses "verkennen", but both are less than
optimal.

Indeed, that seems the best idea, at least what the browser-part concerns.

I'm not so sure about the repository-part though. Is "bibliotheek" the
accepted translation in this context? To me "bibliotheek" is a perfect
translation for "library", but it feels awkward to use it for a
repository. OTOH the alternatives "magazijn", "vertrouweling" and
"schatkamer" that Van Dale offers are even worse.
