Don't know if this already came up in this discussion, but what about using a
menu that pops up on clicking the history button?
That would solve the problem with "to many clicks" and "extra dialog" as well as
the "insert on click" issue. It would be only 2 clicks to insert a log message
from history and it is normal that menus raise a event on clicking a menu item
so that would not be confusing any more.
