I can recommend running Registry Mechanic and perhaps AutoRuns from
www.sysinternals.com to see what's executing on you troublesome machine.
Well that applies to all Windows boxes really, and a good defragger and
Spyware removal tool as well..
What an upfront cost vs Linux eh.
