No, that can't work fine.
Please, please! If you upgrade, use the installer, then reboot.
If you downgrade, first deinstall the current version, install the older
version, then reboot.

Only the installers can set/remove the correct registry keys. If you
don't use the installers, you mess up the whole installation!

I'm wondering: how many times a year do you have to format your
harddrive and reinstall windows from scratch?

As I said: if you use the installer and reboot after the installation as
requested, then everything will be fine.

No. We have two packages for every release. One is the official version,
which uses '.svn' folders inside the working copies (as any other
Subversion client does too), and one is a patched version which uses
'_svn' folders to work around a VS.NET bug with web projects.
