I guess we should ask the spell checker about the encoding it's using
and then convert all strings to that encoding first before passing them
to it.

Bad idea. Two spellcheckers on the same text is worse than not using a
spellchecker at all. Because a word in one language may only differ in
one or two chars from a word in the other language - and then you
wouldn't see that you spelled it wrong.
