subclipse sync and java project

Hi,

I understand this might not be a subclipse specific question but I don't
exactly understand how to work with a subclispe checke out project:

once the project is checked out I can't set the project properties
(build paths etc. etc.) nor add "packages" or "source folders" as
eclipse says "project is not a Java project".
Is there a way to have the best of both world (Eclipse "source objects"
and project properties toghether with subclipse team shared projects?

How do you go to achieve this?
