Thanks for clarifying this. I did find it a bit peculiar to keep a
protocol spec in a directory called "notes" :-)

Should this fact be documented somewhere? Where would be a good place
to put it? Or is it already mentioned somewhere I didn't notice?

No problem, my patch is already so tiny it's resistant against any
attempt of belittlement :-)
