I can give this a +1 if no one objects. I can only evaluate it as a
consumer of the API and code, as opposed to the code itself. The
1.5.x branch with these patches applied works substantially better
than without. As the comment says it is completely broken right now.
I have some quibbles with the results but this is a definite major
improvement over the current branch code.

I am not sure why no one else has voted for this yet, so I figured I
would chime in.
