very close to 1.5.0-alpha1

Hyrum was going to roll 1.5.0-alpha1 today, but there is still an
entry in the STATUS file that involve API changes. We discussed it in
IRC, during a huge review marathon tonight, and felt that even for an
alpha1 we shouldn't release APIs that are likely to go away.

The change in question is r29454, but it depends on these:

 * r29268, r29269, r29287, r29389
   Fix 'log -g'.
   Notes: Performance improvements may follow, but merging this is better
     than nothing (as 'log -g' is currently and completely broken on 1.5.x).
   Votes:
     +1: hwright

(In other words, applying the above four changes removes the last use
of an API, and then r29454 removes the API itself.)

I'm in the middle of reviewing the 'log -g' changes (and please join
me if you can), but I probably won't finish tonight. I will try to
finish as early as I can tomorrow, so Hyrum can roll the release.

There are a few other changes in STATUS that aren't so crucial for
alpha1, but it would be great to have them reviewed and voted on too.
