The "4 letters" that you mentioned before is inaccurate - you're probably
thinking of "svn update" (in which there are presently five). For "status"
there are at least six columns and at least ten different characters can appear
in the first column.

Nevertheless I agree that it's fine as it is, with "svn status --help" and
other forms of help readily available. Several of the codes are rarely seen.
