Side note: Dave, is it possible to use gzip --rsyncable on the .tar.gz
file? (If convenient - if your system gzip is patched to support
--rsyncable.)

I ask because I actually do throw these tarballs into a svn repository
as part of the Debian packaging process. We discussed just last week
the advantages of this codec variant, and after all it *is* backward
compatible with the standard gzip decompressor.
