I have no problem with either approach. I just know this has been
discussed to death and the "decision" has always been that a tag is only
created if a release is official and not until it is official.

I would be happy to find additional mailing list threads on the topic.

If you read just that last thread I sent, you will see there were some
fairly strong opinions expressed on both sides of the issue.
