As a long time lurker, I just want to add this to this document, that do
not forget UTF-8 when it gets to the BOM. You might not like it, but the
W3C has added it as a MAY rule (see [1] and [2]) (or rather did in 2001,
but that hasn't stopped too many programs for completetly ignoring it
[including ClearCase on Windows :-)]).
