We officially recommend apr 0.9x (and httpd-2.0.x), and ship apr 0.9x
in our release tarballs. That's because we don't want people upgrading
and breaking binary compatibility. It's also the version we officially
test against.

That said, however, there's no reason you can't use apr 1.0 or 1.1. It
should work just fine, as long as you *start* with those versions.
