I'm not sure I said that I didn't want to keep history data. In fact, I
thought I was pretty clear that we needed the ability to sync back to later
revisions. Since that is the case, history data is required to be there.
However, there comes a time when having all the history for the large files
adds up, and it is necessary to remove old versions of the data. We don't
want to do this, but as other threads have explained, industrial disk space
(and its management) is not cheap.

Subversion (and a lot of other SCM software) is absolutely suited to the
job.
