We've had this exact discussion in the past. Sometimes it's a vague,
fuzzy line when trying to distinguish between "fixing a bug" and
"changing the UI". Many developers felt that the old UI behavior *was*
buggy by not tracing renames, and that we've simply fixed a behavior
that was broken all along ("It's the way 1.0 was supposed to behave, so
we're not really breaking UI compatibility.") Other developers agreed
with your position. There's no correct answer. But as Mark already
said, most of this change already happened in svn 1.1, so there's not
much to argue about anymore. The damage is already done (or bug
already fixed, depending on how you view it.)
