Then the book needs to change:

clearly states that the long form is the keyword and the short(er) forms
are aliases. We shouldn't state these are the aliases, yet canonify to
them. The set of canonical values must, in my mind, be exactly the ones
that are listed in the documentation as the non-aliased values.

I have no real problem with this, as long as the documentation is
changed to reflect it (and it more closely reflect the CVS usage, so
there is less suprise).
