Furthermore, if you're enough of an expert to make use of the logs,
you're probably also enough of an expert to recover most of your data
from a slightly-corrupted repository, although the procedure may be more
painful.

So, I'd say the comparison with CVS *is* apt, if you assume an expert is
involved. And if no expert is involved, then the logs are useless.
