Downgrading to 1.4.2-4 and upgrading to 1.5-1 both appear to fix the
problem, they pass -pthread to the link command, although 1.4.2 is too
old for Subversion releases.

Having downloaded the tarball, as far as I can tell it contains
ltmain.sh from Debian's 1.4.3-10 package. It's probably a good idea
to avoid using this version in future tarballs.
