I told myself I was going to stay out of this discussion, but I must
say, as a person who does use VMS from time to time, I would find using
the semicolon here quite reasonable.
(For the curious, my second choice at this point would be a single @, it
seems considerably more readable than @@, and if you need to version
files with @number in them, using a trailing @ seems like a reasonable
approach to me.)
