If I run diff3 manually it has no trouble finding diff, although I consider
it a code bug and not an install bug, I agree that it should just be
documented since the external diffs are being replaced. Adding some text to
the message dialog about choosing which diff utilities to use would be best

It sounds like a bug in the diff3 installation? Not sure it's worth
an Subversion issue, especially with Sander working on replacing the
external diff calls anyway, but maybe a FAQ item is in order? If you
and/or the reporters agree with this analysis, I'll whip one up...
